Excursions need to be booked by March 31, 2026. They will take place subject to sufficient registrations.
Pre-congress
Photo workshop on by Alex Wild (University of Freiburg; Biology I), duration: half day, cost: 40 €
Probably many of you know Alex Wild amazing ant photos. He is kindly offering to hold a photo workshop. So if you want to learn more about how to take good pictures, here you go. Bring your own camera and equipment. The workshop is booked out.
Post-congress
1) Canoeing on the river Rhine (from Bad Bellingen to Grissheim), Friday 9:30-17:00, Freiburg Main Station, 70 €
Close to Freiburg there is the river Rhine with its beautiful oxbows. Explore them in a guided canoeing tour. No experience is required and boats and equipment will be provided. The start- and endpoint of the tour will be reached by a train from Freiburg (main station).
2) Guided Historix City Tour Friday 11:00-13:00, Rathausplatz 2, Freiburg, 15 €
Freiburg has a long history. Learn more about it in a city tour (themes: City, Gates and Storytellers: the cathedral walk; Graveyards, Ghosts and Murderers). Exclusive stories are told; researched by historians, written by authors, and presented by actors.

3) Wine tasting Friday 15:30-17:30, Peter-Thumb-Straße, 40 €
Freiburg and the nearby Kaiserstuhl are famous wine areas in Germany. Enjoy some wine in a wine tasting of local organic wines.
4) Excursion ‘Schauinsland’ Friday 10:00-14:00, Platz der Universität, Freiburg cost: 20 €
Next to Freiburg there is the ‘Schauinsland’ (height: 1283 m), the town’s landmark mountain. Take the cable car to get to the top in 20 minutes; have a walk around and enjoy the panoramic view. You can see as far to the French Vosges and on clear days even up to the Swiss Alps. ca. 10:00-16:00
5) Mountain Hike (Freiburg), duration: half day, cost: free
Join our mountain hike. We will ‘climb’ a local hill (Rosskopf) and look for ants on the way – there should be a chance to see large Formica mounds.
